STOP HINKLEY UPDATE Jan 2021 PDF

Although the deadline has passed to register an interest in this inquiry at Hinkley C, TASC will be taking a keen interest on the implication for the cooling system at Sizewell C.

Opportunity to block Hinkley power station Fish Slaughter at Public Inquiry

Seawater extraction for Hinkley Point’s new cooling system will cause mass fish-kill, including countless juveniles. This planning Inquiry is the opportunity to get the 2013 licence cancelled.  They were supposed to design the new intake to minimise fish-kill, but have found they can’t.

Fishing and conservation interests strongly argued in principle in 2018.  Rather than argue the Environment Agency was wrong to accept seawater cooling in 2013, we can now argue that the new designation of Marine Protection Area should require scrapping of the old licence.  Let’s also argue that protected species (Twaite/Alis shad, river and sea lampreys) and the at-risk European eel have absolute protection against processes that harm or kill them.  This comes under the Habitats Regulations, which the Environment Agency are arguing will be breached.

Cut-off date for registering interest and terms of the Inquiry is Close of Play MONDAY 26th October

Subject:  Inquiry on permit EPR/HP3228XT/V004: NNB Generation Company (HPC) Limited;

The terms of the Inquiry should be wide, to allow scrapping of the licence to be fully considered, because any feasible fish diversion measures could not meet the Habitats Regulations.

Further grounds for scrapping include

  • the new international status of the area as a Marine Protection Area.
  • the nuclear contaminants that would be disturbed in construction
  • the killing of European Protected Species (EPS) sucked in with the abstracted water

The killing of EPS is forbidden under the Conservation of Habitats & Species law, when there is an alternative.  There is an alternative – to build a cooling system on the Hinkley Point site, using air-cooling or evaporative cooling towers.

The company is currently test boring in Bridgewater Bay to extract cores to test for contaminants. This is preparatory to applying to take out about a million tonnes – they have no permits yet for this and it is being strongly opposed on both sides of the Severn Estuary.

The company’s Appeal documents are at https://consult.environment-agency.gov.uk/psc/ta5-1ud-nnb-generation-company-hpc-limited-2/

About 70 earlier responses very largely opposed to the change and many pressing to scrap the whole cooling water licence are on a link there.

  1. I am hopeless to see how little humanity learns about our limitations and responsibilities with the planet. The cynical attitude towards our own survival or whoever tries to fight for it. Do they believe they are beyond death? Or that they can buy another world like this with the money they make out of destroying it?
    I don’t get it..

  2. very true Maria – I hope that Hinkley was instead put tidal energy – I can see we use electric power everyday – but how can we generate it on a large scale and in a sustainable manner so that peoples children children can live in a decent world? I don’t know – tidal energy ? Wind ? Solar – Hinkleys new building is very very costly and is prob failing to work …………..
