Steve Thomas ~ Emeritus Professor of Energy Policy, University of Greenwich

Joint Project Webinar to understand Contract for Difference, RAB and PPA – Many ways for taxpayers to finance new NPP from 13 September 2024: The main speaker was Steve Thomas who gave an excellent overview of financing models and their problems; speakers from the Netherlands, Poland, Bulgaria, Czech Republic and Sweden gave short information on financing models in their countries. Find the presentations here: https://www.joint-project.org/2024/09…

The webinar is well worth a watch and will help to understand the financing for new nuclear, Hinkley Point C and the controversial Sizewell C, due to be built on Suffolk’s Heritage Coast. Steve Thomas views on the finance for Sizewell C starts 22 minutes into the webinar but it’s also useful, from the beginning, to hear how Hinkley C costs have spiralled out of control and are costing the French dear.

With many pensioners losing out on the winter fuel allowance it will surprise many that, as soon as Sizewell C get’s the FID (Final Investment Decision) a SZC tax will go on our electricity bills, this could happen by the end of the year. Even those who have chosen an electricity supplier that doesn’t deal in nuclear power energy will still have to pay.
