The NFLAs have welcomed last week’s Parliamentary announcement by Energy Secretary Michael Shanks that Britain’s plutonium stockpile will be ‘put beyond reach’. The proposal, based on a recommendation from the Nuclear Decommissioning Authority, is to ‘immobilise’ the civilian stockpile, prior to long-term disposal in the Geological Disposal Facility.
