GLI Group and local residents continue the fight against Sizewell C
At East Suffolk’s full council meeting this evening, Green, Liberal Democrat and Independent Councillors called for East Suffolk Council to formally object to Sizewell C. The Green, Lib Dem and Independent Councillors raised concerns over the enormous planned construction on an inadequate road network, a lack of the necessary volume of fresh water, predicted pollution to seawater and damage to wildlife, as well as the financial viability of the French-owned developers EDF.
Councillor Tom Daly, Green ward councillor for Aldeburgh and Leiston, will ask the Conservative Leader of the Council to Council join the GLI Group in standing behind the residents’ group Together Against Sizewell C and the 10,400 people who signed the petition opposing the build. He commented:
“The Leader of the Council says that he supports Sizewell C even more strongly than he did before, which shows just how out of touch he is. The Conservatives need to understand that the public’s concerns about Sizewell C are not going away. The cost to our finances and our environment will be huge, and we can’t afford to stop fighting this decision.”
“The GLI Group stands with East Suffolk residents, who have made it clear that they strongly oppose this build. The Examination Authority is of the opinion that ‘the coastline will not be resilient for the entire life of the project’. This should be a major concern for ESC, not simply ignored. The RSPB and East Suffolk Friends of the Earth are supporting the Judicial Review that Together against Sizewell C are pursuing. East Suffolk Council is looking increasingly isolated in not opposing this misuse of resources at this critical time.”
Cllr David Beavan, Leader of the GLI Group and Lib Dem member for Southwold, gave the following quote:
“Nobody seems to want to fund this white elephant which will replace green levies on our bills with a nuclear levy. It costs three times more than wind power and will not start for 12 years a least, destroying our coast in the meantime and using up huge amounts of fresh water which the local water system cannot sustainably supply.”
Concerned residents also submitted questions to the Council. Pete Wilkinson, chairman of Together Against Sizewell, asked the Leader “SZC is an environmental, financial and political mess which, even if it was to be built, will do nothing to help avert the climate crisis and will only add to our biodiversity crisis. You don’t combat an existential emergency by taking 15 years to build a nuclear complex which itself has a massive environmental impact. Does the leader of the council agree that the SZC development should not proceed in these circumstances.”
