Subsidised energy bills for poorer people are being considered by ministers, who say the middle classes should expect higher gas prices for the rest of the decade. Jeremy Hunt, the chancellor, is considering introducing “social tariffs”, which would offer means-tested rates when the price guarantee ends in 2024.
